Kebbi govt have no hand in teacher’s salaries deduction – NLC, NUT

From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have distanced themselves from the involvement of the State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, in illegal deductions from the teachers’ salaries allegedly meant for the Teachers Registration Certificate.

State Chairman of NLC, Murtala Usman and NUT chairman, Adamu Usman Isgogo, denied the approval of the governor on the purported N14 million deduction from the September salaries.

While briefing newsmen at the Labour House, Birnin Kebbi, NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, confirmed that the State Governor, after an interaction session with him, has ordered the immediate reversal of the deduction.

According to him, “the attention of the Nigeria Labour Congress Kebbi State Council has been drawn to an illegal deduction from the September 2025 teachers’ salaries in Kebbi State. On receiving the complaint from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), a committee of inquiry was set up to verify the complaint, and it was ascertained to be true. A joint delegation of the NLC led by the State Chairman, Murtala Usman, interfaced with the two (2) ministries concerned, namely: Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance.

The findings revealed that the deduction was made on the basis of the professional registration fee (Teachers Registration Council). The delegation was privileged to meet with His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, and it was finally resolved that the deduction was NOT duly approved by His Excellency, nor was he pre-informed before the deductions.

Consequently, the executive governor has directed the immediate reversal of the deductions to the affected members with immediate effect. His Excellency has also cautioned the Ministry of Finance and all other relevant ministries to desist from making any deduction from workers’ salaries without due approval.

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress wishes to express sincere appreciation to His Excellency on the timely intervention to avert industrial disturbance in the state.”

NUT chairman, Comrade Adamu Usman Isgogo, who was represented by the State Secretary of the Union, Comrade Gazali Hassan Maccido, confirmed that the governor did not have approval for the deduction of the money.

He added that the affected teachers would receive their money back immediately and tendered apologies for any inconveniences such a deduction might have caused.
