The Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has rescued about 140 schoolchildren from a fire outbreak which engulfed Nooroh-Haq School, Birnin Kebbi, on Saturday night.

It was gathered that the governor and his convoy were passing by when he sighted a fire within the school premises, which prompted him to stop and supervise the evacuation of the 140 children from the school to a safer place in the state capital.

While briefing newsmen at the scene, Governor Idris explained that he was passing along the road when he saw smoke from the area and ordered his driver to stop.

He said, “We are just passing by, and I saw smoke coming out of the school. Initially, I was arguing with my friend that it could be smoke from the burning of tyres. But after I looked at it very well, I realised it is a school, and we stopped to supervise the evaluation of the pupils.

“We discovered that the school had over 140 pupils, and we have evacuated them to a safer place in the town. We saw that there were gas cylinders inside the school, and that is why it took the fire service to quash the inferno.”

The governor and his team stayed at the school to break their fast until the fire was eventually extinguished.

Governor Idris added that there was no loss of life in the incident.
