Kebbi: 11 traders die in road accident, 65 sustain injuries

About eleven onion traders travelling from Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State to Niger State have been dead in an accident along Mayama/Koko-Besse road of Kebbi State.

The Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),SP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed their death in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.

According to him, “on 27/11/2023 at about 0600hrs, there was a fatal motor vehicle accident along Maiyama/Koko road, involving a DAF Trailer with REG. NO. SKK837X driven by a yet to be identified driver, conveying passengers,bags of onions, bags of beans and six (6) motorcycles and travelling from Goronyo LGA of Sokoto State to Niger State.On reaching a point near Dada village, Koko/Besse LGA, the driver lost control of the vehicle as the truck head suddenly severed from the body.

“Consequently the truck head alone,swerved into the bush.As a result, Sixty Five (65) passengers, all males from Sokoto State, including the driver sustained various degrees of serious injuries.

“On receipt of the accident report, a team of traffic Policemen from Koko Division rushed to the scene and removed the victims to General Hospital koko, where a medical Doctor confirmed Eleven dead, while the remaining victims are currently responding to treatment.

“In light of the above, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Chris Omonzokpea Aimionowane, psc, mnips prayed the gentle souls of the deceased persons to continue to rest in Jannatul Fiddaus and wished the injured persons a speedy recovery.The CP further warned all drivers plying the highways to avoid overloading and over-speeding while behind the wheels to prevent future reoccurrence.”
