The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical officers from clinical duties for mistakenly leaving scissors inside a patient’s body after a medical procedure.

The negligence, which occurred at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, Kano, has since led to the death of a woman and mother of five, simply identified as Aishatu Umar.

A statement issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, on Wednesday said the suspension commenced immediately and would subsist pending the outcome of further investigations.

The board also disclosed that the case has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive probe and appropriate disciplinary action in line with professional standards and existing laws.

“The board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathises with them over this painful loss.

“We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement said.

The incident came to public light after Aishatu Umar died a few days ago of severe complications arising from the surgery.

Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, had reported that his wife experienced severe health complications after the surgery and repeatedly complained to hospital officials before her death.
