Kano State Police have held a strategic security meeting with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN as part of measures to promote a peaceful relationship between farmers and herders in the state.
A statement on Thursday and signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa disclosed that the meeting was held at the Bompai Police headquarters of the Command in the state.
Speaking at the occasion, the State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Abdullahi Adamu Bakoji described the engagement as critical to sustaining peace in the state.
He identified recurring causes of conflict to include crop destruction, cattle rustling, encroachment on cattle routes and grazing reserves, night grazing, reprisal attacks and misinformation that escalates minor disputes.
Bakoji said his association had intensified internal sensitization of members, sanctioning of errant herders and collaboration with traditional institutions, while pledging to continue to promote peace and obedience to the law.
In his response, Kano State Police Commissioner, Adamu Bakori commended the leadership of the Association for its maturity and cooperation, noting that the meeting was part of the Command’s proactive, intelligence-led and community-centred policing strategy.
He said the police had put in place comprehensive security arrangements for the last quarter of the year and will prioritize conflict prevention through prompt response to early warning signals and community partnership.
He directed the Deputy Commissioner, Operations and the State Intelligence Department to strengthen intelligence gathering in agrarian local government areas , sustain round-the-clock patrols along cattle routes and flashpoints, while maintaining engagement with Miyetti Allah, AFAN and traditional rulers, and ensure rapid mediation of disputes.
He urged herders and farmers to remain law-abiding and report grievances through lawful channels, assuring that the Command would not allow any individual or group to truncate the prevailing peace in the state. End.
