Over 30 people have been killed in a fatal road accident that occurred early Sunday at Kwanar Barde in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, officials have confirmed.
The crash involved a trailer travelling towards Gujungu which reportedly lost control, allegedly due to reckless driving, before ploughing into other road users.
Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently being treated at different hospitals across the state.
Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for the Kano State Government said preliminary findings indicated that the trailer driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the deaths of more than 30 persons.
“The accident involved a trailer heading towards Gujungu which allegedly crashed due to reckless driving, resulting in the death of over 30 people, while many others sustained serious injuries,” the spokesperson said.
Reacting to the tragedy, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, describing the incident as devastating for the state.
“This is a painful loss, not just to the affected families but to the entire people of Kano State,” the governor said in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The governor offered prayers for the deceased and their families, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
“I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and ask Allah to grant their families the strength to bear this painful loss,” he said.
In response to the incident, Governor Yusuf directed the Kano State Ministry of Health to ensure that all victims admitted to hospitals receive free and adequate medical care.
He also instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to assess the situation and provide necessary support to the affected families.
The governor further warned motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
“Reckless driving must be avoided at all costs to prevent a recurrence of such devastating incidents,” he cautioned.
Medical and humanitarian teams have since been deployed to assist victims and their families as Kano mourns one of its deadliest road accidents in recent times.
