Kano State government has procured Ready –to- Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) worth N1 billion to support malnourished people in the state.

Speaking at the 11th Edition of the Nutritious Food Fair held in Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remarked that the intervention demonstrates his firm commitment to ensuring that no child in the state suffers from hunger or malnutrition.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubaka Labaran Yusuf, he noted that for transparency and reach, the distribution of the therapeutic food would be closely monitored by health authorities, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders.

He added that the nutrition campaign in the state is targeted at over three million children aged 1- 59 months with the goal of reducing deaths associated with pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, neonatal infections and malnutrition -related complications.

He expressed confidence that the measures would reverse the state’s troubling nutritious trends such as stunted growth and help in ensuring that every child in the state grows healthy, strong and well nourished.

In her remarks, the Country Representative and Political Director of the U.K funded Propcom+, Dr Adiya Ode, noted that over 31.8 million Nigerians are suffering from acute food insecurity, adding that the situation is compounded by acute malnutrition among women and children in the country.

She described the figure as alarming and urged Nigerians to work together to change the situation by making nutritious food available, affordable and desirable for every household.

She stressed her organisation’s commitment to driving the transformation through climate driven smart and market driven solutions that empower smallholder farmers and promote sustainability.

She also applauded their partnership with the private and public sector, noting that their partnership with the Kano State government and Harvest plus is strengthening the seed- to- self journey of nutrient dense foods, ensuring that farmers earn more, consumers eat better and markets grow better.
