The Federal Government has installed a one-megawatt solar hybrid power system at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Mustapha Abdullahi, disclosed this at the project’s commissioning ceremony on Friday.
Speaking at the occasion, he described the solar hybrid system as a milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy development. He noted that the system utilises a unique technology, adding that “even if you have shade or dust on it, it will definitely still produce or harvest electricity”, and explained that the innovation was specifically designed to suit the local environment.

He stated that the facility features advanced digital integration. “You will see a smart monitoring system… from your phone or devices, the laptop, you will be able to control, to see the load,” he explained, stressing that users can track performance and detect faults remotely.
Regarding the infrastructure, Abdullahi maintained that the system integrated multiple components. “You see the inverter and battery all interconnected… it’s going to come with an array of tools together. It’s not an isolated system,” he said.
He further explained that the hybrid solar system was backed by extensive data. “An energy audit has been conducted long ago… we went ahead to simulate with the population… they have more than 40,000,” he said, pointing out that the system was designed to meet the university’s growing energy demand.
He revealed that the installation serves as a pilot for future expansion across other institutions.
