The Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has urged residents to stay alert and observe preventive measures following the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Abuja by the Federal Government.
In a statement signed on Wednesday by its Director General, Muhammad Adamu Abubakar, the KNCDC directed health facilities to enforce zero-compromise compliance and urged clinicians to maintain a high index of suspicion, especially for patients presenting with sudden fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, sore throat or unexplained bleeding.
It also called for strict adherence to core Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures, including regular hand hygiene in line with the WHO five moments, appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), environmental sanitation, proper waste segregation and safe injection practices.
According to the KNCDC, Ebola manifests between 2 and 21 days after infection and is contracted through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person or animal.
The Center explains that infection occurs when such fluids come into contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound.
The Center listed the signs and symptoms to include sudden high fever, extreme weakness, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and unexplained bleeding, and advised the public to report suspected cases to the nearest health facility immediately.
