At least five people have died and 11 others were rescued following two separate building collapses in Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service said the incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and along Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area. Both structures were reportedly under construction when they collapsed.
The service’s spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Abdullahi, six construction workers were trapped when one of the buildings collapsed. Four of the victims were rescued unconscious and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors later confirmed their deaths.
The deceased were identified as Sunusi Siraju, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim, 26; and Abubakar, 30.
In a separate incident, an Islamiyya school building collapsed after the fire service received a distress call at about 2:40pm from one Umar Sani.
Abdullahi said eight students were rescued alive, while another student was rescued unconscious but later died in hospital.
The deceased student was identified as Khadija Muhammad, 14, while Hassana Issa, Usaina Issa and Zuleyhat M. Gambu, all 13, were among those rescued.
The fire service said the immediate cause of the collapses had not been established as of the time of filing the report, adding that a preliminary investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Abdullahi urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to observe safety measures and comply with approved building standards to reduce the risk of further building collapses.
