Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has joined his colleagues in the Senate to mourn the death of former Katsina South Senator, Bello Mandiya, describing his passing as a loss to Katsina State and the entire country.

Mandiya, who died in Abuja in September 2026, at the age of 62, represented Katsina South Senatorial District in the 9th Senate from 2019 to 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also served as Chief of Staff to former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari.

Kalu paid tribute to the late lawmaker during Wednesday’s plenary presided by Senate President Godswill Apkabio, following a motion sponsored by Senator Dandutse Muntari, who succeeded Mandiya as the representative of Katsina South.

Speaking in an emotion-laden voice, Kalu recalled his relationship with the deceased, highlighting the personal bond they shared both within and outside the National Assembly.

The former governor described Mandiya as a man of integrity, moral uprightness and unwavering commitment to public service, noting that his contributions as a chief of staff and a senator reflected his dedication to the people he served.

Recalling their time together in the 9th Senate, Kalu said Mandiya stood his ground on matters of principle and integrity, while maintaining a friendly disposition and refusing to harbour grudges against others.

He described their relationship as one that transcended politics and parliamentary duties, saying the late senator was more than a colleague to him.

Kalu further expressed shock over Mandiya’s death, reflecting on the inevitability of death and urging his colleagues to recognise the transient nature of life.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the government and people of Katsina State, praying that they would find the strength to bear the loss.

The Abia North senator expressed confidence that Mandiya’s legacy of integrity, cordial relationships and service to the nation would endure, serving as a point of reference for those who aspire to public service.
