In the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on February 28, 2025, which nullified the November 2024 Rivers State Local Government elections and halted statutory monthly allocations to the state, Rivers State has been embroiled in political turmoil.
However, Dr. Emeka Kalu, the Director General of Global Initiatives for Good Governance, has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for ’emerging as a beacon of hope, working tirelessly to restore peace and stability. ‘
Kalu said Fubara has prioritised the interests of the citizens even as the Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of 27 lawmakers and directed fresh council polls for August 2025.
In compliance with the court’s directives, Governor Fubara instructed the sacked 23 Local Government Chairmen to officially hand over to administrative heads. Dr. Kalu praised this move, stating that it reflects the governor’s maturity, respect for the rule of law, and dedication to transparent governance.

“Governor Fubara’s leadership has been exemplary. His commitment to peace, accountability, and good governance is a testament to his resolve to move Rivers State forward, even in the face of mounting opposition,” Kalu said.
Amid escalating tensions, Governor Fubara has urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm and continue their daily activities. In a statewide broadcast, he assured citizens that his administration would carefully study the certified true copy of the Supreme Court verdict and act in the state’s best interest. He emphasised that his actions would be guided by the principles of justice, equity, and the rule of law.
Dr. Kalu noted that the governor’s call for peace comes at a critical time, as prolonged instability could have severe consequences for the state.
“Governor Fubara’s proactive measures to address the crisis have been instrumental in calming tensions and ensuring that Rivers State remains on the path of progress. As the nation watches, the judiciary’s role in upholding democratic principles and the rule of law remains paramount. Governor Fubara’s administration stands as a shining example of how leadership, transparency, and a commitment to the people can overcome even the most daunting political challenges,” Kalu added.
