The Kaduna State Government may suffer inadequate experienced hands in its workforce across its ministries, departments, and agencies this year, findings revealed.
As of March 2021, the Kaduna State Government has 337 political appointees among its 31,401 direct employees, gulping about N3.3 billion salary bill – aside from those working for the 23 local governments.
Credible sources within the system hinted that the last time the state embarked on mass recruitment across its MDAs was in 1988; who have now reached their retirement age in service.
The sources further hinted that some of the batch have earlier retired before attaining 35 years in service because they have clocked 60 years of age while some have also resigned or died within the years under review.
The sources who spoke in confidence further noted that contrary to the claim that there is redundancy in the public sector, the few senior staff on the ground are multitasking to get the job done which is not sustainable.
One of the sources said MDAs like agriculture, human services and social development, health, environment, education, and work would be more affected by the development.
“The last time we did mass recruitment in Kaduna State was in 1988. If you do your simple plus and minus, you will see that those employed them have reached 35 years in service. This is apart from those that have retired before now because they are limited by their age.
“In the 2024 budget of SUSTAIN Manifesto, I’m not sure if there is provision for mass recruitment as we saw it in 1988. So what this means is that there will be work overload for the remaining staff and you know that is not sustainable because it will affect work efficiency in the long run.
“That is why some of the senior staff are being posted here and there at short intervals which was not the way civil service works in Kaduna until recently. We hope the executive arm of the government is already thinking along this line”.
