JUST IN: Senate begins emergency plenary on Electoral Act amendments

Nigerian Senate

The Senate has commenced an emergency plenary session on the controversial amendments to the Electoral Act amid ongoing protests at the National Assembly.

The convergence comes in the wake of the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, with pressure being mounted from civil society organisations, opposition parties, labour unions, professional bodies, regional leaders and youth groups.

The emergency session is being presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with the other senators in attendance.

While announcing the sitting on Sunday, the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, said, “The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.”

Per reports, Tuesday’s emergency session began at noon as members of the public await the conclusion of deliberations on the Electoral Act amendments.
