June 12: Release all detained EndSARS protesters – Shehu Sani urges Tinubu

By John Ogunsemore

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure the release of all #EndSARS protesters still in detention.

Sani made the appeal in an X post on Monday.

The ex-lawmaker and socio-political commentator said the detainees should be released in the “spirit of the June 12 struggle”.

On June 12, 1993, millions of Nigerians trooped to the polls to elect a new President.

However, the military administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election adjudged to be the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.

Many Nigerians and civil society organisations, including Sani, who subsequently took to the streets to demand the actualisation of the mandate of Bashorun MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the election, were clamped into prison.

Similarly, millions of Nigerian youths in October 2020 protested police brutality across various cities in the country.

The protests led to attacks on some police stations and security formations and some of the protesters are believed to have been detained in the process.

In his X post, Sani said, “In the spirit of the June 12 struggle which we fought 30 years ago, I call on the President to release all persons still held in the Nigerian Prisons because of the EndSars protest.”
