As the nation celebrates Democracy Day, Dr. Raymond Edoh, a young Nigerian, prominent public figure and advocate for democratic values and youth inclusiveness, applauds the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in fostering a democratic environment that encourages growth, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria. This year’s theme for Democracy Day is “Renewing Our Commitment to Democracy,” reflecting the need for every Nigerian, especially the youth, to be resolute in their pursuit of a democracy that works for all.
Dr. Raymond Edoh made the statement today, the 12 of June, 2025 stating that Democracy Day, which commemorates Nigeria’s return to democratic rule on June 12, 1993, is an essential reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought for the rights and freedoms we enjoy today.
“It is a day to reflect on our journey towards a better society and to galvanise our efforts towards building an inclusive nation where every citizen can thrive”.
Dr. Edoh notes, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership signifies a commitment to democratic principles and economic revitalisation. His policies aimed at stimulating growth and encouraging investment are crucial for the development of our dear nation. We the youth, who make up a significant chunk of our population, have a pivotal role to play in this transformative journey.”
As Nigeria grapples with numerous challenges, including economic instability, Dr. Edoh encourages the youth to take ownership of their future. He believes that their involvement in political processes and their commitment to entrepreneurial ventures can significantly contribute to the country’s development.
“According to a recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics,
Nigeria’s economy is projected to grow by 3.3%, indicating a positive trend despite global economic challenges.
“We the youth must recognise that our hard work and dedication can drive this growth. By creating businesses, engaging in community development, and being politically active, they can contribute immensely to the economy,” Dr. Edoh adds.
With the youth playing an integral role in shaping the political landscape, Dr. Edoh urges them to participate actively in political processes. “It is imperative for we the young Nigerians to vote, advocate for policies that benefit us instead of complaining and protesting, and hold leaders accountable through legal and official approaches. Our voice matters, and our vote is our power,” he emphasises.
Engaging in politics is not only about voting but also about understanding the issues that affect the community. The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development highlights the importance of youth participation in governance as crucial for sustainable development. “By educating ourselves the youth about current affairs and engaging in dialogue, we the young Nigerians can influence positive change”.
Dr. Edoh also underscores the importance of education in empowering the youth. “Education is a powerful tool that can elevate individuals and communities. Young people should prioritise their education, seek knowledge, and invest in skills that will prepare them for the future job market. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports that higher education can bolster economic growth and reduce poverty (UNESCO, 2023). Investing in education will not only benefit the individual but also contribute to building a skilled workforce that can support Nigeria’s economic aspirations”.
In his message, Dr. Edoh calls for unity among Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations. “For Nigeria to achieve its full potential, we must embrace our diversity and work together for the common good. This involves recognising and celebrating our differences while striving towards our shared goals,” he states.
“President Tinubu’s administration has taken steps towards fostering national unity, exemplified by policies aimed at inclusivity. The achieved balance between regional development and political representation is crucial for a harmonious society. According to a report by the Centre for Democracy and Development, national cohesion is fundamental for preventing conflict and promoting economic stability.
As we celebrate Democracy Day, Dr. Raymond Edoh reiterates his commitment to advocating for a better Nigeria and calls upon all citizens, especially the youth, to remain steadfast in their efforts. “Let us honour the legacy of those who fought for our democracy by committing to its preservation and enhancement. Every effort counts. Let us work together to shape a future that reflects our dreams and aspirations as a nation. In this spirit of hope and determination, let us all join hands in the pursuit of a prosperous Nigeria. The hard work of today will undoubtedly pave the way for the brighter future our children deserve”, Edoh concludes.
