Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has urged members of the Rotary Club of Abuja Wuye Premium, District 9127, to embrace selfless service and deploy their ideas, energy and resources towards tackling challenges confronting their communities.
Jonathan spoke at the maiden investiture of Festus Ugwuoegbu as president of the club for the 2026/2027 Rotary year and inauguration of its Board of Directors in Abuja.
Represented by the Chief Executive Officer of Hadiza Musa Ujah-Offoboche Foundation, Hadiza Musa Ujah, the former First Lady said the challenges confronting communities were real, but so was the capacity of committed citizens to address them.
“When we serve above self, we prove that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. I, therefore, urge everyone to lock arms with our new president. Bring your ideas, your energy and your passion and together, let us build a legacy of service that will outlive us all,” she said.
Jonathan particularly charged Ugwuoegbu to see his emergence as pioneer president not merely as an elevation to office but a responsibility to provide purposeful leadership.
“To our incoming president, stepping into this role today means you are planting a seed. You are not holding a title; rather, you are holding a torch,” she said.
She also challenged members of the newly inaugurated board to recognise the responsibility that comes with leadership.

She urged the board to lead with empathy, listen to members and place integrity at the centre of its decisions.
“You do not walk this path alone; this entire club stands ready to support you,” she added.
Ugwuoegbu, in his remarks, pledged that his leadership would prioritise sustainable interventions capable of making lasting differences in people’s lives rather than merely organising activities.
“We do not want to merely undertake activities; we want to create impact,” he said.
“We do not simply want to complete projects; we want to transform lives.
“We do not want our service to end when an event is concluded; we want the benefits of our service to endure.”
