A new Hollywood movie, The Woman King, starring Nollywood actor, Jimmy Odukoya, makes its cinema debut nationwide today, Friday, September 16, 2022.
Produced by Julius Tennon and Maria Bello, and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film had its premiere last Sunday at Filmhouse Cinema, Lekki, Lagos. The celebrities that graced the premiere included Jimmy Odukoya, Uti Nwachukwu, Iyabo Ojo, Bisola Aiyeola, Jide Kene, Chigurl, Anto Lecky, BamBam, Elozonam, Simi Drey, Hawa Magaji, Samuel and Bisola Otigba, Saga Deolu, Leo Da Silva, Daala Oruwari, Khalid, and Diana Edobor.
Set in the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 1820s, The Woman King is a historical epic film about the Agojie, an all-female group of warriors, who protect the kingdom. The group’s general, Nanisca trains a new generation of warriors to fight against an enemy who wants to destroy their way of life.
The Woman King parades top Hollywood actors like Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, John Boyega, and Nollywood’s Jimmy Odukoya among others. While Odukoya plays Oba Ade, the villainous Oyo general who can’t stand the idea of a woman being a soldier, Viola Davis acts the Agojie general, Nanisca; and John Boyega plays King Ghezo, a real-life figure who ruled Dahomey from 1818 to 1858 and engaged in slave trade.
As The Woman King hits the cinema across the country today, Jimmy Odukoya’s expectation is to see Nigerians exude with pride in any area they are representing the nation. “I want Nigerians to have a sense of pride, that Nigerian pride, in any area they are representing our country and doing it well. I want this movie to spark a sense of curiosity and inspire Nigerians to believe in their dreams, because it is possible,” he stated.
FilmOne Entertainment distributes The Woman King in Nigeria, in partnership with Sony Pictures.
