Senator Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo is a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, being the first civilian Governor of old Anambra State, former senator who represented Enugu State as well as a statesman, powerbroker and kingmaker

He rose from a humble beginning, completing his secondary education in Awka in 1956 before obtaining his Teachers Certificate from St. Peter’s College, Zaria, in 1959. He furthered his studies at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology in Ibadan, before proceeding to the University College, Ibadan, where he graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English. This academic background equipped him with the intellectual grounding that would later distinguish his public speaking and administrative competence.

When he joined the Nigerian Peoples Party (NPP) and eventually emerged as its chairman in the old Anambra State in 1978, Senator Nwobodo showcased talent and capacity among the people, and earned their confidence. He thereafter became the governorship candidate of the party in the 1979 election at a remarkably young age of 39. He won the election, and became the first Governor of Anambra State, confirming his popularity among the people.

His emergence as governor at that time was significant. He inherited a portion of a territory that was scarred by the Nigerian civil war and in urgent need of rebuilding. The people had great expectations, and he did not disappoint.

From October 1979, when he assumed office to October 1983 when he left, he showed capacity to govern and his tenure was characterised by extraordinary delivery of social and economic infrastructure.

Within that period, his administration established the Nike Lake Resort Hotel in Enugu, Sunrise Flour Mills Limited, the Anambra State Broadcasting Service, the Anambra State University of Science and Technology, the Ikenga Hotels chain, and Colleges of Education at Eha Amufu and Nsugbe. The legacies of these institutions still endure.

Many of these institutions have evolved into federal establishments serving the successor states of Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi.

Senator Nwobodo’s investments in education, industry, hospitality and broadcasting reflected a rare breadth of vision for a state governor of his era, and his projects have continued to provide employment and opportunities for thousands of citizens across the region.

At the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999, Nwobodo returned to public life as Senator for Enugu East Senatorial District and served until 2003. Again, his considerable experience contributed to the nation’s fledgling democracy as he usedchis position as a federal lawmaker to advocate for the development of the South-East region.

He has contributed significantly to the socio-economic and political development of Enugu State and Nigeria as a whole. He is an elder statesman whose wisdom and wise counsel have helped the young generation in governance and leadership.

For his statesmanship, vision and industry, which make him an enduring symbol of selfless service to Nigeria, one whose foresight laid foundations that have continue to benefit the people of the old Anambra State, Enugu State and beyond, Senator Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo is winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award 2026.
