Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, has arrived in Abuja ahead of the International Conference on Security and National Unity, jointly organised by Jama’atu Izalatil Bidiah wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS Nigeria) and the Muslim World League of Saudi Arabia.
The two-day conference, which President Bola Tinubu is expected to declare open at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja today, will focus on Nigeria’s security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other threats, while examining their implications for sustainable socio-economic development, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
Al-Issa and his delegation were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate; Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, and other dignitaries.
The conference, themed “International Conference on Security for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” is expected to bring together government officials, governors, lawmakers, Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, diplomats, business leaders and other participants from Nigeria and beyond.
Speaking after welcoming the Saudi delegation, Chairman of the conference’s Media and Publicity Committee, Garba Mohammed, described the Muslim World League as the principal international partner for the event, making Al-Issa a key figure and co-host.
“We are here to welcome the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa. The Muslim World League is the main partner convening this conference with JIBWIS Nigeria. So, you can say he is a co-host of this conference,” Mohammed said.
He said the conference was not limited to religious issues but would address broader questions of human development, security, tolerance, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.
“The fact that it is an Islamic-based organisation does not mean that it is strictly for Islamic development; it is for the development of mankind, humanity as a whole,” he said.
Mohammed added that the Muslim World League had organised similar engagements in other parts of the world, stressing that the Abuja conference was intended to provide a platform for broader discussions on security and development.
The organisers said participants would deliberate on Muslim unity, diversity and peaceful coexistence among people regardless of ethnic or religious differences.
The programme will feature plenary sessions and expert panels focusing on countering terrorism and armed banditry, strengthening community resilience, promoting sustainable peace and developing global partnerships for socio-economic development.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, is expected to serve as the Royal Father of the Day.
Other expected participants include governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly, Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, diplomats and captains of industry.
The conference will end with a national preaching session scheduled to hold at the JIBWIS headquarters in Utako, Abuja tomorrow.
