Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a LaLiga 2 match.
De Miguel, 30, sustained a serious head injury in the closing moments of Monday’s encounter between the two clubs, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time when a long ball sent the Tenerife striker through on goal. Owono rushed out of his area to intercept the ball but, unable to use his hands outside the penalty area, attempted to clear it with his foot.
However, the goalkeeper struck De Miguel in the head, leaving the striker badly injured near the halfway line.
Medical personnel rushed to attend to him and treated him on the pitch for several minutes before carrying him away on a stretcher and taking him to hospital.
According to reports by Spanish media, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest before medical personnel successfully resuscitated him.
Although his condition reportedly stabilised on Monday evening, Tenerife announced on Tuesday morning that his health had deteriorated.
He died shortly afterwards from injuries sustained in the collision.
The incident happened in a fiercely contested match in which both teams had already lost a player to a red card before the late collision.
