A Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi recently sentenced a 48-year-old man, Makinde Rasaq, who was arrested with a Honda SUV filled with refuse on Lagos Island last week, to 13 months of community service at Kirikiri.
In a statement made available to the Daily Sun, LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the accused, who faced seven charges, pleaded guilty to all counts and was sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment with an option of community service totaling 13 months. The offences included breach of peace, indiscriminate dumping of waste, failure to patronize PSP operators, illegal transportation of waste without a valid license, and obstruction of officers.
The man, arrested while illegally dumping refuse at the Tinubu Fountain on Saturday night, is suspected to be part of a syndicate deliberately creating the impression that Lagos is dirty. He was detained at Adeniji Adele Police Station before being handed over to Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officers for arraignment by the State Ministry of Justice.
Speaking on the conviction, Dr. Gbadegesin said it sent a clear message of zero tolerance for indiscriminate waste disposal. He urged residents to dispose of waste properly by patronizing LAWMA-accredited PSP operators, in accordance with Lagos State environmental laws. He emphasized that proper waste management is essential, and residents must always use PSP operators for better service delivery.
