An Israeli airstrike targeting a school in Gaza City that provided refuge to displaced families claimed the lives of at least twelve Palestinians, including children.

The attack, which took place on Tuesday, has drawn international condemnation.

Palestinian authorities reported that the Israeli airstrike hit the Mustafa Hafiz School, where thousands of displaced people had sought refuge.

“After an Israeli plane dropped a bomb on the second floor of the building…” the bodies of five men and two children were pulled out, stated Mahmud Bassal, a civil defence agency spokesman. At least 15 individuals were also wounded in the attack.

The strike was verified by the Israeli military, which said it was directed at a Hamas command centre within the school.

“Hamas terrorists used the command and control centre to plan and execute attacks against IDF (Israeli army) troops and the State of Israel,” the military stated, describing the strike as a “precise” hit against the terrorists it claimed were operating inside the school.

Hamas denies the Israeli allegations, maintaining that they do not use civilian infrastructure for military purposes.
