From Mohammed Umar Midala
The Isa Dika tree was an important historical landmark associated with the traditional history and migration of the people of Biu. According to oral tradition, the tree was planted in 1872 by the 22nd Kuthli of Biu – Mari Biya, one year before the migration from Pelaminta to present-day Biu in 1873.
The planting symbolized the fertility and productivity of the new land, particularly its suitability for farming, vegetation and livestock grazing. A portion of the tree was traditionally transferred to the new settlement as a symbol of continuity, prosperity and hope.
For more than a century, Isa Dika stood near the Palace Square, beside the Biu Local Government Secretariat and the former Duriya Daily Market, witnessing generations and the development of Biu town.
After approximately 145 years, the historic tree naturally fell on 21 September 2017 at about 2:04 p.m., reportedly without wind or human destruction.
Although the tree is no longer standing, its historical significance remains. Isa Dika represents migration, settlement, fertility, agricultural heritage and the enduring relationship between the people of Biu and their land.
Indeed, Isa Dika was a symbol of migration, land fertility and traditional heritage. Its history deserves to be preserved through oral accounts, photographs, written records and where possible, a memorial at its former location for future generations.
