Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed that those responsible for the killing of security chief Ali Larijani “will have to pay for it,” following an Israeli strike that claimed the official’s life.

In a message published on his official Telegram channel on Wednesday, the day of Larijani’s funeral in Tehran, Khamenei described the assassination as proof of Larijani’s significance and the animosity of Islam’s enemies.

“Without a doubt, the assassination of such a figure attests to his importance and to the hatred that the enemies of Islam harbour toward him,” he said.

Khamenei added a stern warning: “Every drop of spilled blood comes at a price, and the criminal murderers of these martyrs will soon have to pay it.”

The supreme leader, who has not yet appeared publicly since taking office after the death of his father, ex-supreme leader Ali Khamenei, emphasised that Larijani’s death would not go unanswered.

The attack marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, coming amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel. Tehran has repeatedly condemned Israeli strikes on its soil and vowed to respond to threats against its officials.

As Iran mourns Larijani, observers warn that the incident could further inflame the conflict in the Middle East, raising fears of retaliatory actions and a potential spike in security incidents across the region.
