The body of deceased Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried in a Shiite shrine in his hometown of Mashhad, the Fars news agency reported on Tuesday.

According to the outlet, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the burial will take place behind Imam Reza’s mausoleum, similar to Khamenei’s father.

The mausoleum of the eighth Imam of Twelver Shia Islam, Iran’s state religion, is regarded as the country’s most important Shiite shrine.

Prior to this, a public ceremony is planned in Tehran, according to Fars.

Details of the procedure and schedule are to be announced later.

Mashhad, a metropolis with a population of about 3 million in the north-east of the country, is the second-largest city in Iran.

Khamenei was born there on April 19, 1939.

He died in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday in Tehran.
