Iran conflict: Syria accuses Hezbollah of shelling its territory

Syria has accused the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of firing artillery shells into its territory, in what appears to be another sign of the widening tensions linked to the ongoing regional conflict.

According to Syrian state media, several shells were launched overnight from neighbouring and landed near the town of , close to the Syrian-Lebanese border. Military officials said the shells fell near positions occupied by the Syrian army.

In a statement carried by the state news agency SANA, the Syrian military accused Hezbollah fighters of targeting its forces and warned that it would not tolerate attacks on its territory.

“The Syrian Arab Army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syria,” the army said, adding that it had observed movements of Hezbollah reinforcements along the border area.

The development comes amid the broader conflict involving and Hezbollah, which intensified after the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, , during earlier strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.

Since then, exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters have escalated in parts of eastern Lebanon, while Israeli airstrikes have struck several locations across the country, including areas around .

Hezbollah had previously supported former Syrian president during Syria’s civil war. However, following his removal from power in 2024 by an Islamist coalition opposed to the pro-Iranian movement, the group’s supply routes through Syria were disrupted, increasing tensions along the porous border shared by the two countries.
