The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has expressed concern over what it described as the “alarming scale of attacks” on Christian places of worship in Nigeria since the Boko Haram uprising of July 2009.

In a statement jointly signed by its Board Chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi, and Head of Campaign, Chidinma Udegbunam, the organisation said the past 16 years had witnessed the razing and sacking of countless churches across the country.

While noting that the destruction of churches symbolises a wider assault on religious freedom and the right to worship, Intersociety insisted that urgent steps must be taken to safeguard Christian communities.

“We have painstakingly documented, over the last 16 years, the number of Christian churches that have been razed, desecrated or sacked across different parts of Nigeria. The trend is disturbing and paints a grim picture of the level of intolerance and violence that Christians in this country are subjected to on account of their faith,” the statement reads.

The group said its advocacy work has always been anchored on the sanctity of human life and the need to defend minority rights within the Nigerian space.

According to Umeagbalasi, “our work is priceless because it is geared towards saving lives and protecting Christianity and Christians in Nigeria or any part thereof.

“The pattern of destruction we have witnessed since the July 2009 Boko Haram uprising has left indelible scars on communities and displaced thousands of worshippers who no longer have safe spaces for fellowship.”

The group added that its findings should not be ignored by policymakers and security agencies. “We are calling on the government at all levels, as well as international partners, to take immediate action in addressing this recurring tragedy. Failure to act not only undermines freedom of religion but also emboldens perpetrators of such heinous acts.”

They expressed gratitude to supporters and partners who have consistently drawn attention to its advocacy, pledging to continue pushing for accountability and protection of Christian communities.
