First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to embrace genuine friendships and acts of kindness, saying strong human connections remain essential to building peaceful and united communities despite advances in technology.
In a message to mark the International Day of Friendship on Thursday, the First Lady said the annual observance serves as a reminder of the role friendship plays in fostering peace, understanding, mutual respect, and social cohesion.
“As the world commemorates the International Day of Friendship, we are reminded of the power of friendship to unite people, strengthen communities, foster peace, understanding, and mutual respect,” she said.
The First Lady expressed concern that, while technology has made communication easier, many people are becoming increasingly isolated.
“No matter how far technology advances, man was never created to be alone. As we become more connected digitally, human isolation is increasing by the day. We are emotional beings, and we should never underestimate the power of genuine human connection,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu urged Nigerians to use friendship as a tool for promoting compassion and social harmony, encouraging citizens to reject attitudes and behaviours that breed division.
“Friendship reminds us to be our brother’s keeper, to show kindness, and to reject unhealthy behaviours that divide us. A simple act of kindness can heal a broken heart and help in making our world a better place,” she said.
She also encouraged Nigerians to extend love and compassion to those around them.
“Go out there, give someone a smile, reach out with compassion, and be a friend,” the First Lady said, wishing Nigerians and the global community a happy International Day of Friendship.
