Insurgency, banditry won’t end until Nigeria resolves national question — Fayemi

Former Ekiti State Governor and ex-Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has linked Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, including insurgency and banditry, to deeper unresolved structural and national questions.

Speaking on Nigeria’s challenges in ARISE News, Fayemi argued that tackling insecurity requires more than security operations, stressing that Nigeria must first address fundamental questions about its national interest, objectives and political structure.

According to him, the country is dealing with both a leadership crisis and structural weaknesses that continue to undermine efforts to build a stable and secure nation.

“Nigeria has both a leadership and a structural problem,” he said.

He explained that resolving the structural issues would help Nigeria return to a clearer national vision and establish a framework capable of advancing the country’s interests.

“The structure will enable us to return to the vision the country is promoting; what is our national interest?” Fayemi asked.

The former governor maintained that the absence of a clearly defined national objective had contributed to the persistence of several challenges confronting the country.

“Unless our national objective is defined, we will have these problems,” he said.

His comments come as Nigeria continues to battle multiple forms of insecurity, including terrorist insurgency in parts of the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in several northern states, as well as other violent conflicts across the country.
