On a breezy December evening at the Landmark Boulevard Space, an unusual kind of anticipation filled the air, one that comes not from celebrity headliners or overhyped shows, but from the promise of discovering the next wave of comedic talent.
The Lekki Comedy Competition, held on 15th December 2024, marked another confident step in a growing movement championed by its curator and producer, Chukwuka Adigwu.
A Stage Built for New Voices
What unfolded that evening was not the typical Lagos comedy night. Instead, it felt like the unveiling of a new creative chapter. Families settled in comfortably, younger audiences leaned forward in curious expectation, and community members arrived simply eager to support “the next big name”, whoever it might be.
Chukwuka’s vision for the competition was unmistakable: an incubation space rather than a spectacle, a stage where emerging comedians could test their voices without fear of being overshadowed by big names or drowned out by noise.
A Producer With a Purpose
Midway through the evening, Chukwuka shared a reflection that has since become central to the spirit of the competition. His excitement was not performative, it was the enthusiasm of a producer who understands exactly what a platform like this can do. And he would know: the competition has now generated 30 new comedians, giving them their first structured entrance into the Lagos comedy ecosystem.

The event’s strength also lies in its collaboration with professional comedian and foundation founder Ekene Smith, whose work in youth empowerment aligns seamlessly with Chukwuka’s goals. Together, they have shaped the competition into a hybrid of performance, coaching, and community engagement.
Their partnership brings a refreshing seriousness to the craft, not rigid or formal, but intentional. It is clear that this is comedy with a mission.
An Atmosphere That Felt Like Home
Though professionally staged, the evening retained a warmth that is rare in competitive events.
