Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements are occupying large swathes of land across Northern Nigeria because of failure of political leadership, especially under President Bola Tinubu and his All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

Atiku stated this in an X post after hosting political stakeholders from Borno State, led by Hon. Mohammed Kumaila, in his residence on Tuesday night.

The 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disclosed that the conversation at the meeting centred on current “worsening” security situation, especially in Northern Nigeria.

“The consensus is that the occupation of Nigerian territories across some parts of  North East, North West, and North Central states is a clear failure of political leadership, especially under the Tinubu-led APC Federal Government,” he said.

Atiku said it was unacceptable that bandits and terrorists continue to overrun communities, imposing levies and disrupting farming activities.

“I believe that with the right political leadership, Nigerian security forces have the capacity to take on the insecurity confronting the country.

“It has become urgent for citizens to unite and rescue Nigeria,” he stated.

Atiku thanked the Borno stakeholders for their show of concern about the state of the nation and expressed readiness to support efforts aimed at restoring the peace and economic prosperity of the country.
