Insecurity: South West stakeholders convene in Abeokuta

Heightened concerns over security threats in South West have prompted an urgent call for vigilance among residents, amid reports of suspected criminal elements infiltrating communities across the region.

According to information in circulation, the alleged marauders are believed to be operating within villages, towns, and forested areas, with fears of coordinated activities already taking shape. Observers warn that the situation, if left unchecked, could escalate into a wider security crisis.

In response, a public dialogue aimed at addressing the growing concerns is scheduled to hold today at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta.

The announcement was issued by Olusegun Odegbami, who urged residents to take advantage of the platform to stay informed and engaged on issues affecting regional security.

The theme is “It is tomorrow – ‘Before the storm of insecurity in the SW arrives…..”

The statement read in parts: “The threat is real.

“The marauders are at the doorsteps of South West Nigeria, planning, probing, and even plundering already.

From reports, they are in the villages, the towns, the forests, sleeping cells.

“The communities must wake up and be aware of the impending storm and its consequences if nothing is done to diffuse it.”

The event, billed as an open forum, will bring together prominent Yoruba socio-cultural leaders, led by Gen. Alani Akinrinade (retd) to engage the public with what organisers describe as “evidence-based discussions” on the security situation.

Organisers say the forum is designed to raise awareness, encourage community preparedness, and explore possible solutions to curb the perceived threats.

The session is expected to run from 11am to 2pm with members of the public invited to participate.
