Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Samuel Uche, former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okoro, National Chairman of Zenith Labour Party, Dan Nwanyanwu and legal Practitioner, Peter Mgbenwelu, have been appointed to head four different Committees of the Imo State Council of Elders.
Uche heads the Peace and Reconciliation Committee with the Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Imo State chapter, Rev Divine Eches as Secretary. Okiro is in charge of the Security Committee which is populated by retired military Generals, and has Capt David Mbamara (retd) as Secretary.
The Strategy Committee is Chaired by Nwanyanwu with a retired protocol chief and Permanent Secretary, Austine Otuokere as Secretary, while Mgbenwelu is the chairman of the Code of Conduct Committee.
Chairman of the Council, and Obi of Obinugwu, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya announced this during the secondnd Quarterly Meeting of the Council in Owerri last Friday.
While inaugurating the Committees, Eze Ilomuanya pointed out that the Council is “disturbed by flashes of nagging social disturbances especially in some parts of Orlu geopolitical zone of the State.
This is unfortunate despite concerted efforts the State government has put in to ensure that social order, peace and harmony prevail in Imo.
“Aware that peace is very fundamental for the unity, stability and progress of any society, the Council had to constitute the three important Committees.”
He urged the committees to work in-synergy with one another and proffer sustainable ways to address flashes of insecurity in the State.
The Elders Council Chairman also lauded Governor Hope Uzodimma for not interfering in the activities of the Council, noting that, “it is gratifying that majority of the decisions reached at our inaugural meeting have been successfully implemented by the governor.”
Addressing the Council, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu regretted the spate of insecurity in South East, and Nigeria.
The octogenarian and entrepreneur, who announced his retirement from partisan politics, described the Council as an interventionist Agency. He pointed out that as a non-partisan body, the Council, considering the quality of its leadership as well as membership, would be of immense benefit to the people of Imo.
