Wants rulers actively involved in nation’s security system

Traditional rulers have been charged to create and build a safe and viable society through active involvement in national security system. Professor Nnaoma Hyacinth Iwu, Department of Political Science, Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU), Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State spoke at a two-day lecture, titled, “The instructiveness of mainstreaming traditional institutions into Nigeria’s security architecture.”

Prof. Iwu

The lecture was delivered at cross-section of post-graduate students of Peace and Conflict Studies, at AAU’s Business School, Akure: “Mainstreaming traditional rulers into Nigeria’s   national security system is vital for fostering a peaceful and secure society. Traditionally, these rulers were the primary authorities before colonialism weakened their structures, yet they still retain legitimacy and community trust.

“Rising insecurity such as kidnapping, banditry, communal conflicts, and crime which has highlighted their importance, particularly as confidence in modern security institutions continues to decline. Evidence from scholarly research   and government actions supports the relevance of traditional institutions in resolving conflicts.

“Studies show strong public confidence in traditional rulers, with many believing, they are more effective than police, courts and government agencies due to their cultural authority and closeness to the people. Their role is especially significant in mediating in local disputes and achieving lasting resolutions rather than merely managing conflicts.”

Iwu revealed that: “Despite their value, traditional rulers face challenges such as political   interference, inadequate resources and the broader failure of the state, which places them under intense pressure.

“To enhance their effectiveness, greater respect for traditional authority, financial support from government and constitutional reform to recognise traditional institutions as a fourth-tier of governance thereby strengthening their contribution to national security.
