A Nigerian engineer, Ismail Akanmu Adebayo, has clinched the top honour at the 2022 Nigerian National Prize for Innovation, walking away with the ₦1.5 million grand prize for his pioneering work in clean fuel technology.
The competition, which celebrates outstanding contributions to Nigerian science, lauded Adebayo’s research on developing a high-performance, low-emission biodiesel. His innovative approach involves enriching Hibiscus cannabinus biodiesel with ferrocene nanoparticles and hydrogen, creating a potent alternative fuel for standard diesel engines.
Speaking from his current research base at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Adebayo expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s energy sector.

“It is a privilege to be recognized on a national level. This award strengthens my resolve to continue developing homegrown solutions to our energy challenges,” he said. “We have immense potential in Nigeria to harness biofuels and other renewables. My work is a testament to that potential, aiming for fuels that are not only efficient but also environmentally friendly.”
Adebayo’s research has produced impressive results, demonstrating a marked decrease in toxic emissions and an improvement in engine performance compared to conventional diesel. His background includes a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and experience as a process engineer, providing him with a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical industry insight.
The judges commended the project for its originality and its direct relevance to the nation’s economic and environmental goals. Adebayo’s success is seen as an inspiration for young scientists and engineers across the country to pursue innovative research that addresses national needs.
