FIFA president Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in March 2027 despite mounting pressure from senior football officials and a campaign by European football authorities to remove him from office.
Infantino confirmed his intention to contest the election, which will be held at the FIFA Congress in Morocco next year, ending speculation that he could step aside amid the growing opposition.
A FIFA spokesperson said there had been no change to the president’s position since he announced in April that he would seek another term.
“The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election,” the spokesperson said.
Infantino has faced criticism over attempts to attract private investment into FIFA tournaments, a move that has intensified tensions with several senior officials and European football authorities.

European nations last month withdrew a threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that efforts to alter the structure of the game in a similar manner would not be repeated. However, UEFA has continued to support efforts to challenge Infantino’s leadership.
The FIFA president has responded by highlighting the organisation’s increased funding and investment in member associations, each of which has an equal vote in the presidential election.
Infantino has also come under pressure from FIFA vice-presidents representing Asia, Europe and North America, adding to the political contest ahead of next year’s election.
Potential challengers have until November 18 to formally declare their intention to contest the presidency, setting the stage for what could become a closely watched leadership battle within world football.
