Two senior officials of a well-known school near New Delhi were arrested following the murder of a 7-year-old student on the premises, police said, on Monday.
The boy was found with his throat slit inside the wash room of Ryan International School in Gurgaon, located in the suburbs of the Indian capital, on Friday.
A school bus conductor was arrested soon after, with police claiming he confessed that he tried to sexually assault the boy and killed him when he resisted.
“The school’s regional head and human resources head were arrested late Sunday night after a committee investigating the crime pointed at serious security lapses on part of the school management,” Gurgaon police spokesman, Ravinder Singh, said.
“They have been booked under India’s Juvenile Justice Act.’’
The arrests come after hundreds of parents and locals protested against the school on the weekend, demanding action against the school management.
There was a heavy police presence at the school, which will remain closed for now, except for students of senior grades, who will sit for exams from Wednesday, media reports said.
The school management said it was cooperating with police investigations.
Sexual abuse of children is rampant in India. A total of 10,854 cases of child rape were reported in 2015.
Activists say that many more cases likely went unreported. In most cases, the perpetrator knows the victim. (NAN)
