Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged political leaders across Nigeria to make the welfare of citizens a central focus of governance as the country celebrates its 66th Independence anniversary.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message, stressing that Nigeria’s ability to overcome its social and economic difficulties would require accountable leadership, national unity and respect for the rule of law.

Reflecting on the country’s 66 years of independence, the former president acknowledged the challenges Nigeria has faced but noted that its people had continued to show resilience.

“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands,” he said.

Jonathan said the responsibility for building a better country could not rest on citizens alone, insisting that leaders at every level must demonstrate greater patriotism and accept responsibility for the state of the nation.

“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” he said.

He called for greater accountability and good governance, alongside personal sacrifice and strict observance of the law, as part of efforts to tackle the difficulties confronting Nigerians.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritizing personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

With another electoral season approaching, the former president also appealed to Nigerians to protect peace and national unity.

He described the forthcoming period as an important test of the country’s democratic maturity and urged citizens to put the interests of Nigeria above political divisions.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritize actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.

Jonathan further encouraged young Nigerians to remain optimistic and courageous, saying Nigeria could achieve sustainable development by properly harnessing its human and natural resources.

He urged citizens to remain committed to national service and collectively work towards a Nigeria that is peaceful, secure and equitable.
