The apex body of the Ijaw nation, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has warned against any attempt to impeach Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stressing that such an action would lead to widespread instability in the Niger Delta region.

The INC president, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, in a statement, expressed concern that current political permutations in Rivers State have failed to take into consideration the historical and political contributions of the Ijaw people to governance and development of the state.

He warned that the Ijaws would not allow their sacrifices to be undermined.

Okaba cautioned that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State is not just ordinary politicking, adding that the Ijaw people, numbering over 40 million worldwide, would not tolerate any attempt to marginalise them.

He further warned that if Governor Fubara’s tenure was truncated, the INC would not guarantee the sustenance of peace in the Niger Delta or the continued rise in oil production.

“If Governor Fubara’s tenure is truncated by the Amaewhule-led Assembly or anybody else, the INC cannot guarantee the sustenance of the current peace in the Niger Delta, or the continued rise in oil production,” he stated.
