The N93/H96 class of the Association of Mass Communication Students (ASMACS), Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has donated a 15KW lithium-battery solar inverter power system, valued at over N6 million, to the institution’s Department of Mass Communication.
The project, comprising a 12KVA inverter and 15 solar panels, was commissioned on Saturday as part of activities marking the class’ first reunion in 28 years.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, commended the alumni for returning to their alma mater to give back and contribute to its development.
“I was deeply touched by your speech, by your action, a complete reflection of what this government under Dr. Peter Mbah looks out for—people that are aligned with vision and actually demonstrating that, and not just talking about it,” he said.
The SSG recalled that IMT, which he said he had known while growing up, once enjoyed a strong reputation for academic excellence but suffered a decline before the present administration intervened.
Earlier, the National President of the N93/H96 class, Lady Lilian Anukwuem, said the reunion provided an opportunity for members to reconnect and give back to the institution that equipped them for life.
She said the class, which obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication in 1998, had faced life’s challenges together, including the loss of some classmates, but remained united.
Anukwuem said the reunion was initially planned before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the process, adding that its actualisation became one of the major priorities of her administration.
She said the class had also provided financial and medical assistance to members and their families in distress.
“We have gathered in Enugu not only to reunite, socialise and make merry, but also to give something substantial back to our alma mater—the institution that gave us the wings to fly,” she said.
She explained that the class deliberately chose a project with lasting impact rather than making a token donation.
“We therefore embarked on a project that, to the best of our knowledge, has never been undertaken by any class set in the history of IMT in this manner,” she said.
