Imo police investigate Egbu power station incident, deny hostage claims

From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation, dispelling claims that personnel were held hostage.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to probe the matter.

Preliminary findings indicate no evidence of abduction or hostage-taking of National Independent System Operator (NISO) or Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) personnel as claimed on Sunday.

Okoye noted that the incident is believed to stem from a disagreement between the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Orashi Electricity Distribution Company.

However, the police spokesperson has assured citizens of the state that police are in control of the situation and are working to maintain peace and order around the facility.
