The Imo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the truck driver involved in the ghastly accident that killed over six people at the Imo State University  (IMSU) junction, Owerri, Imo State.

Spokesperson of the Imo Police Command, Henry Okoye, in a statement, yesterday, said the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has directed traffic officers to embark on a comprehensive investigation and arrest the driver who fled after the accident. He also explained that investigations revealed that the truck driver lost control and diverted to the other side of the road, where it rammed into four commuter buses.

Okoye said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Mack truck with reg no: KWL 857 YE was heading towards IMSU Junction from Orji, along Okigwe road, and allegedly lost control of his vehicle, and diverted one way, where he ran over four shuttle minibuses and some pedestrians along the road, which left many seriously injured.

More so, the commissioner of police tasks the state traffic officers to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the accident and apprehend the driver of the Mack truck, who is currently at large.”

He also added ‘photographs and sketches of the accident scene have been taken and the accidental vehicles have been cleared off the road for easy flow of traffic, while the bodies of the deceased victims have been deposited at the FMC mortuary.

“Efforts are in progress to contact the families of the deceased and injured victims and apprehend the driver of the truck who, immediately, fled the scene after the accident. Meanwhile, while in search of the fleeing driver, the CP has commiserated with the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls and wishes the injured victims a quick recovery, noting that the command is saddened by the incident.”

The CP, however, implored road users in the state to always drive responsibly and always access the roadworthiness of their vehicles to avoid accidents.
