Immigration vows crackdown on corrupt officers

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has warned officers that corruption will not be tolerated, as she received a warm welcome at the service’s headquarters following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of an 18-month extension of her tenure.

Officers and personnel gathered at the Abuja headquarters on Tuesday to celebrate the extension, lining up to receive her.

Thanking the President for renewing her tenure, Nandap said the show of support left her deeply moved. “I was shocked when I came into the headquarters and saw the jubilation, with officers lined up to welcome me. I am overwhelmed,” she said.

She used the occasion to caution personnel against any conduct that could undermine the integrity of the service’s processes, stressing that offenders would face the full weight of the law. “Any officer caught in such a situation will face the full wrath of the law. I promise you, and that is not an empty threat,” she said.

Nandap urged officers to put Nigerians first by improving service delivery and customer relations, noting that much of the service’s work is people-centric. She was quick to add that this must not come at the expense of national security.

“Putting Nigerians first does not mean we should compromise security,” she said, directing officers to guard the service’s processes carefully and ensure applicants are properly guided.

She also called on personnel to educate applicants on how immigration procedures work and how to access the service’s offerings, emphasising transparency, accountability and professionalism.

The extension ensures continuity in the leadership of the NIS, which is responsible for immigration administration, border management and enforcement of Nigeria’s immigration laws.
