Ilkay Gundogan left Manchester City for Barcelona less than a year ago, and rumours about his potential return to the Premier League are starting to circulate.
After winning his team’s Champions League, the German midfielder left on a free transfer last summer. He has contributed significantly to City’s recent supremacy.
During his seven-year stint at the Etihad, Gundogan cemented his status as a club legend. Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, he amassed an impressive 60 goals and 38 assists in 304 appearances, playing a pivotal role in securing a trove of silverware. This comprised two FA Cups, four League Cups, five Premier League crowns, and one Champions League triumph.

Though Gundogan has made 51 appearances for Barcelona and has contributed five goals and fourteen assists, there are reports that he is not happy at the Nou Camp. The 33-year-old is reportedly “in talks” with City about making an incredible comeback after having “made contact” with club executives last week to discuss the possibilities, according to reports in Spain.
While Barcelona may not stand in his way, facilitating a move to free up their wage bill, the transfer fee could be a sticking point. City are reportedly unwilling to pay a significant sum for a player they let go for free just a year ago, while Barcelona would likely seek a substantial fee given Gundogan’s contract still has a year left.
Both supporters and analysts are paying attention to this unfolding scenario, with many anticipating Gundogan’s unlikely comeback to the Etihad.
