The ancient city of Ile-Ife last week Friday, witnessed a significant cultural event with the installation of businessman, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi as Okanlomo Oodua.
The atmosphere in Ile-Ife on that December 6, 2025, was filled with pageantry and celebration, as a host of Yoruba royalty, Nollywood stars, and cultural icons gathered to honor Sanusi and Chief (Mrs.) Olayinka Latinwo, who was also installed as Yeye Bobagunwa Oodua. Prominent figures in attendance included Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland; Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri, the Aseyin of Iseyin; and Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola, the Eleruwa of Eruwa, among other Yoruba monarchs.
The colorful ceremony commenced at the Ooni’s palace, where tradition dictated the completion of various rites before the new chiefs were presented with their ceremonial regalia. The event featured vibrant cultural displays, rhythmic drumming, and spirited performances, reflecting the richness of Yoruba heritage.
The titles of Okanlomo Oodua and Yeye Bobagunwa Oodua are among the highest honors in Ile-Ife, awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional loyalty, service, and commitment to Yoruba culture and development.
Sanusi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ooni for the honor and emphasized the responsibilities that accompany the title:
“This title is not just for recognition. It comes with a mandate to serve, uplift, and protect the dignity of our people.” He pledged his continued support for initiatives that advance Yoruba heritage, economic development, and youth empowerment.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Olubadan of Ibadan, conveyed his gratitude to the Ooni for fostering traditions that unify the Yoruba people globally. He prayed for the newly installed chiefs, encouraging them to act as ambassadors of peace and development.
Ooni expressed appreciation for the presence of fellow monarchs, viewing it as a symbol of unity and shared cultural pride. He celebrated the success of the ceremony and acknowledged the honorees for their significant contributions to the advancement of Yorubaland.
Ooni Ogunwusi urged Sanusi and Latinwo to exemplify leadership, loyalty, and a commitment to upholding and promoting Yoruba culture. He noted that their conferred titles recognized their unwavering support for Yoruba development, peace initiatives, and community empowerment, reinforcing the notion that service to humanity, cultural preservation, and dedication to unity are the cornerstones of Oodua heritage.
