World judo’s governing body has thrown its support behind Nigeria’s push to rebuild the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF), endorsing the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) plan for a transparent, fair and inclusive election.

In a letter dated October 9, 2026, to NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the International Judo Federation (IJF) acknowledged the Commission’s update on the NJF’s administrative status. It noted the dissolution of the NJF Board, the setting up of a Caretaker Committee and the transitional arrangements for fresh elections.

The letter, signed by IJF Secretary General Dr. Lisa Allan, recognised the Caretaker Committee’s mandate to amend the NJF Constitution and convene an electoral General Assembly. It also noted that members of the committee have pledged not to contest in the coming election.

The IJF welcomed the NSC’s efforts and expressed confidence that the process would comply with applicable regulations and requirements.

“We welcome the steps being taken to address the governance matters within the NJF and support the efforts to ensure a transparent, fair and inclusive electoral process,” the letter stated.

The endorsement is seen as a major step in the Commission’s drive to restore administrative stability, strengthen governance and chart a credible path to an elected board for Nigerian judo.

The NSC approved the Caretaker Committee after dissolving the federation’s board. The committee will oversee day-to-day administration, review the constitution to align with IJF requirements, convene an Annual General Meeting to approve the amended constitution, and organise elections to usher in a duly elected board.

Sheriff Hammad chairs the committee, with Ekuta Catherine Ewa, Sule Musa, Bashir Musa Bassey and Oladipupo Idowu as members. Amayo Ngozi is secretary.

The transitional arrangement is expected to ensure continuity in the federation’s administration while laying the groundwork for a more accountable and inclusive governance structure.

The Commission’s action underscores its commitment to strengthening the administration of national sports federations and ensuring their leadership structures operate in line with regulations and the broader goals of sports development in Nigeria.
