Over 70 wives of fallen police officers in Benue state have been empowered by the wife of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba and National President of Police Officers’ Wives Association, POWA, Hajiya Hajara Alkali Baba.
The empowerment took place at the premises of the Police Officers Mess in Makurdi on Friday evening after the POWA President took time to advise and encourage the wives of fallen police officers and those still serving to engage in meaningful ventures that would make them resourceful and supportive to take care of their children.
She noted that the empowerment program was part of her three key point agenda as POWA President which is education, healthy and welfare even as she promised to sustain the effort in other states.
Items distributed include sewing machines, grinding machines and food items such as bags of rice and cartoons of noodles to assist them support their families.
While handing over the items to the beneficiaries, the POWA President said “We want you to know that POWA remembers you and will never abandon you.”
The POWA president also emphasized the need for the women to improve their overall wellbeing through constant exercise and good hygiene for good health and to stay out of gossips and other unwholesome activities.
She lauded the efforts of her husband especially in the area of supporting her to revive POWA nationwide.
“When I came on board, there was no POWA nationally and the gentleman, my husband, the 21st indigenous Inspector General of the Nigerian Police, I call him my world, he brought back POWA, he rebuilt POWA.
“During the EndSARS protest, I told him I would like to go and counsel my women and I started going out. Benue is making the 16 state I have been to. We will continue to replace this in other states”
In their separate remarks, some of the beneficiaries, Godiya Ayuba, Msugh Mariam and Ahmed Halima, commended the POWA President for the gesture and pray God to bless her to succeed in her tenure.
