IGP confab: Benue CP reads the riot act to kidnappers, robbers

Commissioner of Police, Benue State, Cletus Nwadiogbu, has said that the time is up for kidnappers and armed robbers. He told the Inspector General of Police [IGP] Conference in Abuja: “We have arrested 15 suspected criminals from their hideouts.

“The command has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and properties. The command has continued to intensify efforts in combating crime through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and swift response to distress calls.

“It will be too hard for hoodlums to carry out their operations.  I visited some black spots and redeployed tactical team operatives to Benue-Lafia Expressway and Benue-Jos Expressway. The command has imbibed community policing.

“I have warned officers against the use of torture in conducting investigations on suspects. We have charged some of the suspects to court, while others are under various stages of investigation. We apply professionalism, transparency in upholding the rule of law, which has restored public confidence and improved security in the state.

“Benue State has recorded significant milestones in combating violent crimes, dismantling criminal syndicates, fostering community policing and enhancing collaboration with sister security agencies and stakeholders. With the cooperation of the citizens and support of government, the state is calm. We have updated professional capacity of officers in line with global procurement and addressed skill gaps caused by outdated or neglected procedures.

“Operatives at Gbeji Division, with members of the community volunteer guards engaged in gun duel with armed bandits along Vaase-Chito Road. Three armed bandits were killed. Police in collaboration with Ugbokolo youths, foiled an attempted kidnap along Ugbokolo-Aokpe Road   in Okpokwu LG, rescued the victims and apprehended the kidnappers.

“Police raided hideouts of criminals in Makurdi and arrested seven suspected armed robbers. Three suspected armed robbers and kidnappers were in Otukpo LG. We have stepped up night patrols aimed at reinforcing police commitment to serving and protecting the community. “Officers have been charged to stay alert and be proactive in crime and ensure public safety. Officers to conduct patrol with diligence and respect the rights of citizens. We aim to assess operational effectiveness of all units, identify challenges and implement effective solutions. The strategy is to strengthen community policing and enhance security measures within the state.

“Officers have been directed to be professional, firm, and courteous in the discharge of their duties. They are also advised on discipline and integrity as core values that every officer must uphold. Officers should shun corruption and illegal duty. Rather, they should have good relationship with members of the public.

“I have visited traditional rulers and encouraged them to reinforce security collaboration with the police and all other stakeholders to ensure a safer state.”
