A former Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe has advocated the setting up of a Truth Commission of Enquiry to probe atrocities allegedly committed by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South East geopolitical zone.
He said the probe must also be extended to cover the activities of the IPOB-affiliated Eastern Security Network (ESN) as well as the Unknown Gunmen (UGM).
Igbokwe, a staunch critic of IPOB, made the call in a Facebook post on Saturday.
He alleged that the groups have perpetrated acts of brutal killings, arson, extortion, among others since 2012 under the pretext of seeking the creation of the Republic of Biafra.
The APC chieftain said, “We want TRUTH COMMISSION OF ENQUIRIES in the SOUTH EAST to unveil all the atrocities, the brutal killings of our people, arson, destruction of homes, extortion, stealing by IPOB, ESN, UGM and BDF fraudsters since 2012, all in the name of Biafra.”

On September 20, 2017, the Federal Government proscribed and declared IPOB a terrorist organisation.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja unanimously affirmed the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist organisation on January 30, 2025.
A three-member panel led by Justice Hamma Barka dismissed IPOB’s appeal, ruling that the federal government acted lawfully because the group’s activities threatened national security.
IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is currently serving a life sentence for terrorism. He has appealed his conviction and sentencing.
